Message: Statement on Recent Eviction Notices to Asylum Seekers/Declaración sobre avisos de desalojo recientes a solicitantes de asilo (Español Abajo) 

On December 13, 2023, the Village of Oak Park issued “Notice to Vacate” letters to the almost 200 asylum seekers and their children staying at the Carleton Hotel and YMCA in Oak Park. The letter states that the Village of Oak Park has been unable to locate additional support for shelter in Oak Park. The letter then directs asylum seekers to talk to their nonexistent caseworkers about their situations. The Cultivating Youth Bridges Program has been running since late August and the purpose of the program is to build bridges among immigrant youth and our youth. We have heard and shared stories about the devastating journeys our new neighbors have had to endure to get here. We denounce the negligence and dehumanization of asylum seekers residing in Oak Park committed by our village government, informingour Black and Brown asylum seeking neighbors that they are no longer welcome in our community. Further, we would like to outline how the village’s negligence and harm has only traumatized vulnerable families further. 

First, the letter to asylum seekers created anxiety and panic among an already deeply traumatized and vulnerable population. Who approved such a harmful letter to go out without a thorough analysis and discussion on its ramifications for the families impacted? Did the Village’s own DEI director or Public Health Director view this letter? Surely when viewed through both a DEI and public health lens, this letter would be seen by anyone in those fields as problematic. Second,, the letter states that there is aid available for relocation without considering the compounded trauma on children that have been made to travel for months in harrowing conditions, live in a tent city outside a police station, and then transfer schools multiple times. For the first time on 10/31/23, Oak Park gave these families a chance to breathe, to have a break from having to live a life where the odds are stacked against them. There was absolutely no consideration to the well being and mental health of the Black and Brown families or their children. It is absolutely repulsive that the Village of Oak Park prides itself on supposed equitable politics and then has the audacity to conduct an equity assessment while simultaneously treating Black and Brown residents in this manner.. Actions speak louder than words and policies. Oak Park is turning their back on Black and Brown traumatized children,disposing them and not taking their full humanity into account. The psychological harm that is being done to these children is unjustifiable and negligent, and goes against everything this village says it values. 

Oak Park claims to not have the financial ability to continue providing support for asylum seekers and their families, but let’s be honest,the Village hasn't even tried. The first step to actually providing support to families is to see them for the full human beings that they are. Instead, in meeting after the meeting the board talks about them as if they are pawns on a chess board. Oak Park leadership has miserably failed these families and has proven who they actually are. Oak Park has no equitable values, we’ve known that for a long time. We demand that Oak Park retract their letter and internally investigate how such a harmful letter was ever allowed to be distributed. Additionally we demand that the expert task force that Oak Park committed to forming to best handle this crisis, be formed immediately. We further demand the resignations of the Trustees that have lied about upholding the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, but have failed to do so. Oak Park has the opportunity to show the world that there is another way, to model through action the values of equity and respect for human life. Disposing vulnerable Black and Brown asylum seekers and their families is not it.

El 13 de diciembre de 2023, Village of Oak Park emitió cartas de “Aviso de desalojo” a los casi 200 solicitantes de asilo y sus hijos que se hospedaban en el Hotel Carleton y el YMCA en Oak Park. La carta indica que Village of Oak Park no ha podido localizar apoyo adicional para refugio en Oak Park. Luego, la carta ordena a los solicitantes de asilo que hablen con sus asistentes sociales inexistentes sobre su situación. El Programa Cultivando Puentes Juveniles ha estado funcionando desde finales de agosto y el propósito del programa es construir puentes entre los jóvenes inmigrantes y nuestra juventud. Hemos escuchado y compartido historias sobre los viajes devastadores que nuestros nuevos vecinos han tenido que soportar para llegar hasta aquí. Denunciamos la negligencia y deshumanización de los solicitantes de asilo que residen en Oak Park cometida por el gobierno de nuestra aldea, informando a nuestros vecinos negros y morenos solicitantes de asilo que ya no son bienvenidos en nuestra comunidad. Además, nos gustaría destacar cómo la negligencia y los daños de la aldea no han hecho más que traumatizar aún más a las familias vulnerables.

En primer lugar, la carta a los solicitantes de asilo creó ansiedad y pánico entre una población ya profundamente traumatizada y vulnerable. ¿Quién aprobó que se publicara una carta tan dañina sin un análisis y discusión exhaustivos sobre sus ramificaciones para las familias afectadas? ¿El propio director de DEI o el director de Salud Pública de la Villa vio esta carta? Seguramente, vista desde la perspectiva de DEI y de salud pública, esta carta sería vista por cualquiera en esos campos como problemática. En segundo lugar, la carta afirma que hay ayuda disponible para la reubicación sin considerar el trauma agravado de los niños que han tenido que viajar durante meses en condiciones desgarradoras, vivir en una ciudad de tiendas de campaña frente a una estación de policía y luego transferirse de escuela varias veces. Por primera vez, el 31/10/23, Oak Park les dio a estas familias la oportunidad de respirar, de tener un descanso de tener que vivir una vida en la que las probabilidades están en su contra. No se tuvo absolutamente ninguna consideración por el bienestar y la salud mental de las familias negras y marrones o de sus hijos. Es absolutamente repulsivo que Village of Oak Park se enorgullezca de una supuesta política equitativa y luego tenga la audacia de realizar una evaluación de equidad y al mismo tiempo trate a los residentes negros y morenos de esta manera. Las acciones hablan más que las palabras y las políticas. Oak Park les está dando la espalda a los niños traumatizados de raza negra y morena, desechándolos y sin tener en cuenta toda su humanidad. El daño psicológico que se les está haciendo a estos niños es injustificable y negligente, y va en contra de todo lo que este pueblo dice que valora.

Oak Park afirma no tener la capacidad financiera para seguir brindando apoyo a los solicitantes de asilo y sus familias, pero seamos honestos, Village ni siquiera lo ha intentado. El primer paso para brindar apoyo a las familias es verlos como seres humanos plenos que son. En cambio, reunión tras reunión, el tablero habla de ellos como si fueran peones en un tablero de ajedrez. El liderazgo de Oak Park les ha fallado miserablemente a estas familias y ha demostrado quiénes son en realidad. Oak Park no tiene valores equitativos, lo sabemos desde hace mucho tiempo. Exigimos que Oak Park se retracte de su carta e investigue internamente cómo se permitió que se distribuyera una carta tan dañina. Además, exigimos que se forme de inmediato el grupo de trabajo de expertos que Oak Park se comprometió a formar para manejar mejor esta crisis. Además, exigimos la renuncia de los Fideicomisarios que han mentido acerca de defender los valores de diversidad, equidad e inclusión, pero no lo han hecho. Oak Park tiene la oportunidad de mostrarle al mundo que hay otra manera, de modelar mediante la acción los valores de equidad y respeto por la vida humana. No se trata de deshacerse de los solicitantes de asilo vulnerables de raza negra y morena y de sus familias.
